Pakistan host India for blind cricket series

Pakistan host India for blind cricket series

LAHORE: India and Pakistan resumed cricketing ties Friday after three years -- albeit at a low level -- by fielding their blind teams for an international series starting with a
fast-paced Twenty20.

Pakistan has hosted no major international matches over security fears posed by Al-Qaeda and the Taliban since 2009, and India stalled direct cricketing ties after Islamist gunmen killed 166 people in Mumbai in late 2008.

But Pakistanis hope that a trouble-free, limited over series for blind and partially-sighted players from November 18 to 26, will convince others that the country is safe enough for mainstream sporting giants to return.

"It's a historical day for us," Syed Sultan Shah, chairman of the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC), told AFP at the Lahore Gymkhana cricket ground in the eastern city of Lahore where a crowd of 250 cheered on play.

The event is also the latest sign of a thaw in diplomatic and economic relations, although the two nuclear-armed rivals, who have fought three wars since independence from British rule in 1947, remain deeply wary.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf is set to meet his counterpart in India later this month as both countries try to settle a series as early as next March despite a hectic schedule for world champions India.

The countries are united by nothing if not their fanatical love of cricket.

It is the first time in three years that an Indian team are in Pakistan -- the main cricket team last toured Pakistan for the Asia Cup in 2008 -- and the first time in five years that the Indian blind team are playing Pakistan.

It was in Lahore that gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in March 2009, stripping Pakistan of its 2011 World Cup co-hosting rights and forcing Pakistan to play all subsequent international fixtures abroad.

At the cricket ground, one fan waving a massive Pakistan flag and wearing an "I love Pakistan" green top circled the perimeter of the ground, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Attendance was largely limited to children who cheered: "Long live Pakistan" and "Pakistan will win".

One of Pakistan's stand-out players was Mohammad Jamil, a partially sighted school teacher from Kashmir -- the divided Himalayan region that triggered two Indo-Pakistan wars -- who excited the crowd by clocking up run after run.

The two main cricket teams last met in the World Cup semi-final in India this March, watched by both prime ministers.

Afterwards there were calls by players and politicians for the resumption of cricketing links, as millions of fans were missing out due to the nuclear-armed neighbours' strained political ties.

India may have beaten Pakistan in the World Cup, but Pakistan are expected to fare better this week, having won the two previous Blind Cricket World Cups, the last one at home in 2006. The Indian blind team are ranked number two.

"We're trying our level best. All the players are fit and very anxious to play. We're very happy to be here," said John David, the manager of the Indian team that prepared for the match with a 12-day training camp in New Delhi.

A blind team comprises of four totally visually impaired players, three partially blind and four partially sighted players.

Totally blind players are helped by a runner whose one run is counted as double, two as four and four as eight.

The ball is larger than in standard cricket and is filled with ball bearings to help batsmen, bowlers and fielders sense its approach.

Two other Twenty20 matches will be played in Lahore on Saturday and Sunday, with one-day matches scheduled for November 22, 24 and 26 in Islamabad.

Australia plans 10-year jail for match-fixing

SYDNEY - Law ministers in Australia's states and territories on Friday struck a deal that will see sporting match-fixers face up to 10 years in jail.
The ministers agreed to draft new legislation to deal with the issue and ensure it is handled with consistency throughout the sprawling country.
The new laws with impose a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of using inside information for the purposes of placing bets where they know the outcome of a sporting event has been fixed.
There will be similar penalties for those who engage in match-fixing conduct or encourage others to do so.
"The introduction of specific match-fixing offences will send the message to anyone seeking to corrupt sport that we are serious and we won't tolerate that behaviour," national Sports Minister Mark Arbib said.
"We want to make sure we do everything possible to send a message to those people who want to be involved in match-fixing that there will be jail time, and it won't be a light punishment.
"The decision to adopt consistent national match-fixing offences is an outstanding result for sport and fans of sport."
It is expected most states and territories will enact the new laws some time next year.
Attorney-General Robert McClelland welcomed the move.
"Australians love their sport, and want to see their champions play on a level playing field, free from corrupt practices such as match-fixing," he said.
"Today we are sending a clear message to criminal groups and individuals who seek to corrupt sport in this country that their actions will not be tolerated."
The announcement came in the same week that Cricket Australia formed an Anti-Corruption and Security Unit to help maintain the integrity of the country's domestic competitions.

LAHORE - Imran Khan reacting to the sentences in the spot-fixing case said he felt deep sorrow for the three players.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Khan said he felt sorry for the family members of the three players and especially for youngster Mohammed Amir who he called a great talent wasted.

"In a way I also feel sorry for these cricketers because they are from Pakistan where there are massive corruption cases against president (Asif Zardari) and they must have thought crime pays," said Imran Khan.
He said he was pained to hear the news of Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer being jailed for fixing parts of a Test match against England.
Pakistan former Test captain Butt, 27, received 30 months, fast bowler Asif, 28, received one year in jail and 19-year-old Aamer was jailed for six months.
Imran Khan said it was painful to listen to the news.
"It is painful to listen (to) the news as a former Pakistan cricketer and I feel really sorry for their families," Khan, who was on a political meeting here, said. Imran Khan added that the punishments are a wake-up call for Pakistan cricket.
"The verdict is a wake-up call for Pakistan cricket and from now on we should be careful and, like we did in the past, should never allow the corruption to set in," said Khan, who led Pakistan to the World Cup win in 1992.
Khan criticised the previous cricket boards for sweeping the matter under the carpet.
"We should not hide behind the justification that it (fixing) happens in international cricket. It does happen, but Pakistan should set its house in order first and anyone involved should be punished," said Khan.
Khan, himself a great fast bowler, said "I always felt sorry for Aamer. He may have been influenced by the atmosphere around him, secondly he was the best young fast bowler and for the fact that he came out with a confession".

Shahid Afridi finally found a place in the national ODI and T20 team

LAHORE - Shahid Afridi finally found a place in the national ODI and T20 teams after meeting with new PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf on Wednesday. Pakistan is to play the series against Sri Lanka later this month in the UAE. Former Pakistan skipper Afridi, who has retirement U-turns quite a bit of habit, was expected to find a place in team's limited overs squad following a sort of reconciliation with newly appointed Pakistan Cricket Board president Chaudhary Zaka Ashraf. Afridi announced his retirement after his leadership skills and his performance was questioned following the away series against the West Indies in April and May this year. The 31-year-old player was also said to have differences with then team coach Waqar Younis, who stepped down citing health problems lately.
Afridi described his Wednesday’s meeting with Zaka Ashraf as "very positive," and within hours the temperamental all-rounder was named in the 16-man squad for five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates starting on Nov. 11. Pakistan team for Sri Lanka Series in UAE (five ODI’s & 1 T20). The PCB on Wednesday announced the teams for both ODIs and T20 series. The first ODI will be played on November 11 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Reports indicate he is likely to be part of the national team sooner rather than later. Afridi told reporters that he was confident of making a comeback to the national team for the forthcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka and insisted that he still has a lot to deliver.
"I still have a lot to offer to the Pakistan cricket and I am grateful to the Chairman for meeting me and listening to me. I am grateful that he raised my morale a lot," Afridi said after his meeting with Ashraf.
The flamboyant cricketer, though, admitted that his selection into the squad was up to the national selection committee. "Muhammad Illyas is the chief selector and it is for him to decide what to do," Afridi said. The 31-year-old cricketer added that he was ready to perform any role assigned to him and insisted that he shared a good relationship with the current skipper of the team, Misbah-ul-Haq. "I just want to play for Pakistan and it is for the board to decide in what capacity I play. I am willing to play under any captain. I have captained the side and now I am willing to accept any role in the team because I just want to play for my country," Afridi said. The all-rounder, who had earlier in May decided to quit playing the international cricket in protest against board’s decision to remove him from the captaincy after the West Indies tour, said with the change of guard at the helm he was ready to resume his career.
"At that time I thought it was not right for me to play, so I quit, but now with a new Chairman I want to come back," he said.
Afridi also backed Ashraf`s suggestion of having separate coaches for batting, bowling and fielding in the team. "I think it is a very good idea and it really does not matter whether we have foreign or local coaches. But the coaches should be qualified and should have the ability to support and lift the players even if they are not performing and not run them down," he insisted. In an apparent dig at former coach, Waqar Younis, with whom his differences are well known, Afridi said, "I don`t know why he resigned as coach but he certainly didn`t look ill to me. He was very robust and healthy as far I know." Younis stepped down as the coach of Pakistan team after the Zimbabwe tour, citing personal and health reasons. Pakistan is scheduled to play five limited-overs internationals against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates starting Nov. 11.
Ashraf, who took over from Butt last month, had said he wanted to see Afridi back in action in the one-day and Twenty20 cricket formats. But the new PCB chief also wanted to consult other senior PCB officials. The new PCB chief wanted to have three specialist coaches for the national team — bowling, batting and fielding. That concept has Afridi's support. "The only thing I like to see is that all three coaches should have done specialized courses in their respective fields," he said. "That's the only way they could be held accountable."
The team includes Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Imran Farhat, Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Umar Gul, Aizaz Cheema, Juanid Khan, Sohail Tanvir, Abdul Razzaq, Asad Shafiq.

Afridi has a ‘positive’ meeting with Zaka

LAHORE - Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi met Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Zaka Ashraf here on Wednesday.
Talking to the media after the meeting, the all-rounder said that although there was no clear indication of his return to the team, the meeting with the new PCB chief remained positive. Afridi said that he has declared himself available for national duty, and now its up to the selectors to decide whether he should be included in the team.
He added that he still has some cricket left in him, and would like to contribute towards making Pakistan a good team in all three formats.
Commenting on the verdicts handed out to Muhammad Asif and Salman Butt, he said that he felt sorry for their families because of the defamation that this incident and the verdict has brought to them. He also said that this verdict would serve as a deterrent for other players from indulging into such activities.

‘Afridi not an automatic selection choice’Sarfaraz Nawaz

LAHORE - Pakistan’s former pacer Sarfaraz Nawaz believes that Shahid Afridi should not be an automatic choice for selection. The former all-rounder has indicated he wants to join  national team. But Sarfaraz has challenged the wisdom of many by saying that the “boom boom” is not an automatic choice in the ODI eleven.
“Presently Afridi can only make it as a bowler but he has to compete with Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman who have been performing superbly. Moreover, two all-rounders in Muhammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik would also give Afridi a tough fight. Therefore, it will not be easy for him (Afridi) to make it to the side,” said Sarfaraz. “Shahid Afridi needs to improve his batting to become an automatic choice,” added Nawaz.
Sarfaraz also expressed his views on the credentials of the next coach of the Pakistan cricket team. He said a local individual would be more suited for the job. “Unlike a foreigner, the local coach will spend more time in the country. He will understand the system as well as the mental approach of the players,” stated Sarfaraz. “The local coach will also have a better idea of the domestic circuit which will help him find new blood for the team,” concluded Sarfaraz.

Aamer pleaded guilty to fixing charges

LONDON - Teenage strike bowler Mohammad Aamer pleaded guilty to involvement in a spot-fixing betting scam before the trial of his teammates, the court dealing with the case heard Tuesday.
Aamer pleaded guilty to conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments at a pre-trial hearing on September 16.
The 19-year-old's plea could not be reported during the trial of former Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt and fellow fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who were found guilty of the same charges at London's Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday.

Butt and Asif sentenced to jail

Asif and Salman
LONDON - Cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were found guilty Tuesday of fixing parts of a Test against England.
Former Test captain Butt, 27, and fast bowler Asif, 28, face jail after a court in London convicted them of deliberately bowling three no-balls during the Lord's Test in August 2010 as part of a "spot-fixing" betting scam.
Prosecutors alleged Butt and Asif conspired with British agent Mazher Majeed and Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Aamer to bowl the no-balls.
Butt faces up to seven years in prison jail after the jury at Southwark Crown Court convicted him of conspiracy to obtain or accept corrupt payments, and conspiracy to cheat at gambling.
Asif faces up to two years in jail after he was found guilty of conspiracy to cheat, but the jury have not yet decided whether he is guilty of the second charge.
They are expected to be sentenced later this week.
Butt and Asif had pleaded not guilty and they sat in silence in the dock as the jury delivered their verdicts, after spending nearly 17 hours in deliberations over four days.
Majeed, 36, and Aamer, 19, were also charged with the same offences but were not standing trial alongside Butt and Asif.
In a further twist, Butt's wife gave birth to a baby boy just 30 minutes before the verdict was delivered, his father said by telephone from Lahore. Butt already has one daughter.
"It's a matter of great grief for us that Butt has been found guilty. We hope the Almighty will bring him out of this trouble because these are very difficult times for him and the family," Zulfiqar Butt told AFP.
Mazher Mahmood, News of the World's former investigations editor, known as the "fake sheikh" for his disguises, told the court he had approached Majeed pretending to be an Indian businessman.
Majeed claimed he had at least six Pakistani players working for him and that it would cost between £50,000 and £80,000 ($78,000 and $125,000) to fix a "bracket", where bets are made on incidents during a given period of play.
But the cost of rigging a whole result was far more, at £400,000 for a Twenty20, £450,000 for a one-day international, and £1 million for Test matches, Majeed allegedly told the reporter.
The agent was secretly filmed accepting £150,000 in cash from the journalist as part of an arrangement to bowl the no-balls, and recorded allegedly making arrangements with Butt for the no balls.
Butt told the court he had ignored his agent's requests to fix games and had no knowledge of the plan to bowl no balls, while admitting that he had failed in his duty to inform cricketing authorities of Majeed's approach.
Asif meanwhile said he had bowled a no ball at the exact time the agent had predicted to the News of the World journalist because Butt had told him to run faster moments before his delivery.
The team's manager during the fateful tour of England when the scam was uncovered, Yawar Saeed, said Pakistan cricket had been badly tarnished by the case.
"I feel very sad because I tried my level best to tell them to keep away from notorious people. They should have understood that and they committed a blunder, and when you commit a blunder, you are punished," he told AFP.
"I'm also sad because the country's name has been dragged into this entire controversy. Pakistan is known for its talented players but this case has stained the country's image badly," he added.
The case is the worst in international cricket since that of South Africa's Hansie Cronje a decade ago.
Cronje was banned for life in 2000 after it was revealed he accepted money from bookmakers in a bid to influence the course of games as well as trying to corrupt his team-mates. He died in a plane crash in 2002.

Pakistan tie with India, advance to final

After a nasty brawl marred the first meeting of the tri-nation tournament between the arch-rivals, the second match between Pakistan and India ended in a 1:1 draw. However, that was sufficient for the men in green to advance to the final of the tournament in which they will face the hosts Australia on November 3(Thursday).
