SC orders Rs600,000 for families in Kalar Kahar bus accident

ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice of Pakistan Supreme Court on Monday said the amount of compensation to the families of students killed in Kalar Kahar bus accident should at least be Rs600,000 each. In his remarks during the hearing of the Kalar Kahar suo motto case, the CJP said that the compensation being given was not enough. The two-judge bench comprising the Chief Justice and Justice Khilji Arif heard the case. Earlier, the Attorney General of Pakistan presented the investigation report into the Kalar Kahar bus accident to the Supreme Court. The report said that the bus was 29 years old and the Punjab Government had granted it the fitness certificate while the driver did not have the license to drive a passenger bus. The bereaved families were being given Rs38,000 in total which the Chief Justice said was too little. He said the amount of compensation should at least be Rs600,000 per family. During the course of hearing the CJP inquired as to whether any inquiry was carried out against the Motorway Police. He ordered that a report be sought from Faisalabad Commissioner explaining how the bus was granted fitness certificate. Later, the hearing of the case was adjourned till December 11.
