Nawaz Sharif wants Istanbul-like transport system in Lahore

LAHORE - Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif requested the Istanbul Transport Authority (ITA) Director General (DG) Dr Harry Brochlor to send a high level delegation from the ITA to Lahore to introduce a modern traffic system in Lahore on the pattern of Istanbul.

According to press release issued on Saturday, Sharif visited ITA on Friday.
Offering a briefing, ITA DG Brochlor said Istanbul’s coordinated and computerised public transport system includes 4837 buses, trams, metro and other public transport and had the capacity to support 3.5 million commuters, while 7 million commuters used public transport. He said the computerised cards introduced for use in public transport can be used as credit cards in shops and restaurants.
He said that senior citizens and students enjoy special facilities in public transport. He said Istanbul had a historic public transport system and a 136 year-old tram is still used for commuting. He said the ITA employees 9,000 staff.
Nawaz thanked Brochlor and brief him on Lahore’s transport system and said he wished to introduce a modern, foolproof system in Lahore to provide the poor, senior citizens and students cheap commuting facilities. He requested Brochlor to send a high-level ITA delegation to Lahore to introduce a modern traffic system in the city on the pattern of Istanbul. Brochlor accepted the request and said an ITA delegation will come to Lahore after Eid. He said both modernization and investment can be made in the transport sector.
